ANZAC Day

Friday night at Moose's we played the ANZAC Day footy match live and had a pretty big crowd for it. The next morning (ANZAC Day) there was a 'dawn' ceremony at the war memorial on Cambie St at 9am and after that a massive group of people came in for brunch which featured some of the standard classic menu items such as meat pies and chook parmas as well as some specials for the day like lamingtons and Vegemite on toast. We were going to open from 10-2 then again from 6-late but ended up going right the way through from 10am til 3am. It was a massive 17 hr shift but also quite a bit of fun as you can see from some of these pics...

Banff Road Trip

Wednesday morning we left Vancouver at 11am headed to Banff for a few days. Jon's new camera was begging to be tested out so we decided to make a documentary and ask the locals wherever we stopped one question (stay tuned). This made it a lot more fun and was a great way to meet people and break up the drive. The first stop was Hope for some lunch and the first round of interviews. We got a few people in the street and a few in the pub. Almost everyone we asked was extremely friendly and keen to take part.

The first night we stayed in Kelowna with Aidan and went out to the local pub for a few drinks. We ran into one of her friends who managed to win over $12,000 on one poker hand on his iPhone while playing shuffleboard. So there was a round of shots on him.

The next day we took off around 8.30am and headed for Revelstoke to do a half days boarding. This wasn't part of the plan but a couple of people in Kelowna convinced us that the snow up there was amazing so we thought we'd hit it up. Turned out that there was barely anyone there and the snow - on the top 1/2 of the mountain at least - was awesome!

Revelstoke Snowboarding from Jeremy Aiken on Vimeo.

We left Revelstoke about 4.30 and headed towards Banff which was still another 4 hours away. Got hungry around 6.30 and stopped in at Glacier Park Lodge in Rogers Pass for some dinner. This place was as Canadian as you could get with dead animals all over the room, an open fire and hockey on TV. There was a group of adventure sports people in the lounge doing a course on mountaineering or something along those lines. All pretty hard-core adventurers. So we interviewed a couple of them and then had an awesome dinner.

We still had about another 3 hours ahead and about 45 minutes out we ran into a snow storm which slowed us down to about 20k for 20 minutes or so. We eventually arrived around 10pm at the HI Hostel in Banff. It was hip hop night at the bar in the basement so we had a couple of bers then crashed for the night.

Friday morning we were woken before 7am by a bunch of rowdy backpackers who were getting ready to hit the slopes and were waaaay to excited about it. We got up a couple of hours later and had breakfast in the hostel. We dropped in to see Sarah who was working across the street at Douglas Firr hotel then drove downtown to pick up Brenton for some boarding/skiing at Sunshine Mountain. see webcam

The sunshine was definitely out and the hill was amazing. The snow was a lot more packed than Revelstoke but it was still great fun; wide open space which allows you to make up your runs as you go and switch from one to another. We met up with one of Brenton's mates and he took us of the beaten track a bit and down a couple of big drops and into the park to hit some of the jumps.

Friday night we met up with Sarah and Brenton at a bar for a couple of beers at Eddie Burger Bar then headed to ??? for a Bison burger... pretty good! After that we went to the Elk & Oarsman Pub and met up with a bunch of other people and played pool most of the night.

Saturday we were feeling pretty worse for ware but decided we should make the 50k trip to see Lake Louise. It was more than well worth the drive. We ended up spending over 5 hours walking across the frozen lake, building snowmen/women and taking several hundred pics as well as video. We had a seafood chowder in Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and chillxed for a while before driving back to Banff.

Saturday night we met up with Sarah and Brenton again for Mexican at the Magpie & Stump then we went to Boston Pizza for a 'Team Pitcher' and then onto Aurora Nightclub.

The next morning (Sunday) we ate breakfast at a burger place and I had to have the 'Down Under' burger with Elk meat. Not was good as the bison but was great having bacon, egg and beetroot on a burger again! We were due to head for home but before we left we had to check out the famous Hot Springs. Sarah hooked us up with a couple of free passes which was all good. The place was pretty packed... lots of people just lounging around soaking up the sun and the scenery of the snow-capped mountains.

We hit the road after that and went in search of some wildlife on the way home. We stopped a couple of times to get some pics but didn't see any signs of life. Driving down the highway about 2 hours down the road I spotted a herd of Elk on the train tracks so we pulled over and made our way through the snow and waded through a freezing stream to get close enough to get some decent pics.

About 6pm we were in Revelstoke again and still 2 hours away from Kelowna or Kamloops which was about 1/2 way back to Vancouver but we were getting hungry and decided to pull into a pub for dinner. The place was full of 'sledders' (snow mobile riders) because there had been a big meeting in Revelstoke over the weekend and they had come from all over the place to ride. 2 beers and salmon and veggies later we decided we'd be staying the night and checked into the hotel across the street and then went back to the pub and settled in. It closed at 10pm but we befriended the 2 barmaids, the barman and a local who was at the bar and after they closed up we all sat at the bar for another hour or so. When we eventually went back over to the hotel we met the restaurant manager who was in the room above us and we interviewed him and his girlfriend for the doco. Then we went out the back and found 3 guys hanging out in a massive trailer full of snow mobiles and tools etc. They were making strawberry daiquiris with a home-made blender that had handlebars and a 2-stroke engine. They made us a drink and grated us an interview each then fired up the crazy new 2010 Yamaha sled (which was apparently worth about $45,000). I was a little concerned that we'd be waking everyone in the hotel up... but then we found out one of the guys was the hotel manager/owner.

In the morning we were checking out at 11am and the restaurant manager had just closed up until dinner but he saw us leaving and offered to cook up breakfast for us... great service!!

We stopped in Hope again on the way home and sat outside at a pub and had some dinner in the sun. It was about 17C and a perfect afternoon!

Canucks v LA Kings

Finally made it to my first Canucks game Thursday night. It was their last home game and they got up against the lowly LA Kings 1-0. We were in the nose bleed section but it was still a great atmosphere with another sell-out crowd of over 18,000.
